OpenTelemetry Observability Platform

ArborXR Platform Engineer 6 months

Project overview

Built a comprehensive OpenTelemetry observability platform that revolutionized monitoring and debugging capabilities at ArborXR. The project involved instrumenting the entire product codebase with OpenTelemetry to capture logs, metrics, and traces, creating a cost-effective telemetry cluster on Kubernetes, and implementing secure data transmission via OTLP/HTTP. The platform enabled critical dashboards, alerting systems, and advanced debugging capabilities while ensuring system health through metamonitoring.

Challenges

  • Instrumenting complex multi-service architecture without performance degradation
  • Designing cost-effective telemetry infrastructure with high availability requirements
  • Implementing secure data transmission for sensitive telemetry data
  • Ensuring reliable telemetry collection across diverse technology stacks
  • Managing high-volume telemetry data processing and storage efficiently

Solutions & implementation

  • Strategically instrumented codebase with OpenTelemetry for comprehensive observability coverage
  • Built cost-effective Kubernetes telemetry cluster with Grafana, Loki, Mimir, and Tempo
  • Implemented secure OTLP/HTTP protocol for reliable telemetry data transmission
  • Created critical dashboards and alerting systems for proactive monitoring
  • Developed metamonitoring system to ensure telemetry cluster health and stability
  • Optimized data retention and storage policies for cost-effective long-term observability

Impact & results

Reduced mean time to resolution (MTTR) for production issues, enabled proactive monitoring preventing potential outages, decreased debugging time, and provided comprehensive application performance insights that improved system reliability.
